Steam fayre celebrates EAAA anniversary
Published: 29/08/2010 16:26:41
June 28 Vintage, veteran and classic steam vehicles, performing Bernese dogs, the Peterborough Highland Pipe Band and a Saturday night talent show are just some of the attractions at this year’s Walpole Steam and Country Fayre. The event takes place on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 July and will again raise funds for the East Anglian Air Ambulance, the life-saving regional charity which is celebrating its tenth anniversary during 2010. The Walpole Steam and Country Fayre is well known for its activity-packed programme which starts on the Friday evening before the Fayre opens and continues until 5.00 pm on Sunday.  Punch and Judy and other childrens’ games are on offer for younger visitors and a variety of refreshments tents will be available. The event will be officially opened at 11.00 am on Saturday 10 July by Mr Patrick Peal, one of the EAAA’s trustees. Mrs Gwen Davey, one of the organisers, commented: “The Fayre was originally started in the 60s but was dropped about ten years' later. My son Mark always remembered going to it as a young lad and so, with the help of some friends, decided to resurrect it in a new format. Since then, it’s gone from strength to strength but, at heart, it remains a friendly show which has great variety for all ages but which keeps its personal feel. As country people, we’re all too aware of the vital service the air ambulance provides so we’ve supported it for the last ten years and have raised almost £30,000 to help keep the aircraft flying.  This year, we’re hoping to raise even more to help the charity which is celebrating ten life-saving years. Anglia One, the aircraft serving Norfolk, is hoping to fly in to the fayre over the weekend so that visitors can take a look at the high tech equipment it carries and meet its lifesaving crew.†Chris Donaldson, the EAAA’s Fundraising Manager in West Norfolk and North Cambs, said: “The support we’ve received from the Davey family and the Walpole Steam and Country Fayre in recent years is simply amazing. They’re one of our most long-standing supporters, for which we are, of course, deeply grateful and manage to combine their fundraising with staging an absolutely fantastic event which provides a great family day out. We wish them the very best for this year’s event and look forward to joining in the fun.†The Walpole Steam and Country Fayre takes place on a large field on Police Road, kindly lent to the organisers by Tim and Carolyn Rudd. Admission costs £5 for an adult: £15 for a family (2 adults, 2 children) £3 for children (under 15). Entrance is free for senior citizens and the under 5s. Opening times on both days are at 10.00am until 5.00pm, followed by the evening entertainment. There is a large field for caravans and campers. For further information, contact Gwen Davey on 01257 232694.
