Enter our  'Pie in the Sky' dessert competition

Jason WaterfieldDo you have your own original favourite recipe for a pudding or dessert?  If so you could be enjoying ‘sweet’ success if you put it forward for our 10th anniversary competition ‘Pie in the Sky.’

We’ve linked up with four top chefs and restaurateurs to launch a competition to find the region’s best desserts.  We want amateur cooks from Norfolk, Suffolk, Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire to submit their favourite recipes for inclusion in a special fundraising cookbook which will be called ‘Pie in the Sky.’

The book will be launched in the autumn featuring the winning recipes, together with signature puddings from the region’s best professional chefs as well as from celebrities and well-known TV foodies.  Jean-Christophe Novelli and The Hairy Bikers are among those submitting recipes.

Recipes put forward for the competition will be judged by the four chef ‘judges’; Galton Blackiston from the award-winning Morston Hall in Norfolk and star of ‘Market Kitchen’ and ‘Great British Menu’; Jason Waterfield, executive chef at Kings College, Cambridge; Stephen David, Chef-Patron of The Crown at Woodbridge, Suffolk and Martin Lee of The Plough, Bolnhurst from Bedfordshire.

The winning recipe will be served to guests at our 10th anniversary ball on Saturday 9th October  at the Norfolk Showground with its creator receiving two free tickets to see their pudding served to guests.

Galton Blackiston said:  “We’re looking for undiscovered gems - desserts which are unusual and which perhaps feature the wonderful array of produce we have here in the East of England – our superb home-grown flour, beet sugar and fruits for example.  But, of course, we also love chocolate and other not-so-native sweet ingredients.

“I’m delighted to support the East Anglian Air Ambulance and judging the pudding competition will be a real pleasure!”

Lifesaver aleA Suffolk micro-brewery is supporting the East Anglian Air Ambulance with a special beer to celebrate the charity’s 10th anniversary.

The award-winning Mill Green Brewery at Edwardstone near Sudbury is brewing a premium golden ale called ‘Lifesaver’ which has a strength of 4.2%.

The beer is to be officially launched on April 21st at the opening of the East Anglian Beer Festival run by the West Suffolk Campaign for Real Ale.  The festival, at the Bury St Edmunds Corn Exchange, has also chosen EAAA as one of the charities it will be supporting this year.

A limited edition bottled version of the beer will also be available from the charity and other outlets during this year only.

'Special recipe'

Tom Norton, (pictured above, right) who brewed the beer, said:  “I have made this beer to a special recipe.  It is a genuine one-off, so those who want to try it will have to do so during this limited period of availability.”

The brewery is in the grounds of the White Horse pub at Edwardstone.  It currently supplies a number of free houses as well as the White Horse, where the first brew of ‘Lifesaver’ has already gone on sale and beer festivals to order.

Director of fundraising and marketing at EAAA Richard Robinson said:  “This is a wonderful gesture from Tom to make a donation from every pint and bottle sold.  I hope real ale enthusiasts will seek out the beer and encourage landlords to have it as a guest beer if they can.”
